Sojourner Gallery is pleased to present "Mannequin Series," a solo exhibition by acclaimed Latin American artist Pablo Caviedes. The exhibition will be on view from July 17, 2024, to August 2, 2024, with an opening reception on July 19, 2024, from 6-9 PM in our New York Greenwich Village location.

"Mannequin Series" delves into the dichotomy between the natural and the artificial, offering a profound commentary on contemporary society's fascination with virtual and artificial life. Caviedes' work is rich with symbolic imagery, featuring elements such as cameras, TV screens, tripods, and mannequin limbs, highlighting the pervasive "fakeness" in modern life. Through his unique blend of humor and visual metaphor, Caviedes invites viewers to reflect on the loss of natural human qualities and the growing disconnection in our seemingly connected world.

In his artist statement, Caviedes describes his latest series as a continuation of his exploration into the language of metaphors and iconic visual figures from the realm of magical realism. He aims to update these concepts to address the dilemmas of contemporary society, particularly the erosion of what is natural and human in our daily existence. The "Mannequin" series serves as a reminder of the irony inherent in our current way of life, where the artificial often masquerades as the natural.

Critics have praised Caviedes for his ability to enchant and mystify through his art. His works, often described as haunting and atmospheric, evoke a sense of curiosity and isolation, capturing moments that exist between the virtual and the real. Comparisons to artists such as Giorgio de Chirico, Lucian Freud, and Francis Bacon highlight the depth and complexity of Caviedes' visual language. His paintings and sculptures are seen as visual explorations that communicate profound insights into the human condition, blending the symbolic, the real, and the imaginary.

Pablo Caviedes, born in Ecuador and now based in New York City, is an internationally recognized artist whose work has been showcased in numerous countries, including France, Spain, Ecuador, and the United States. Caviedes discovered his passion for drawing at an early age and pursued formal art education at sixteen. By twenty, he was actively pursuing his career as an artist. In 1994, he won the prestigious Paris Award, the most significant accolade for Ecuadorian artists under forty, which allowed him to study in Paris and connect with the European art scene. Since moving to New York, Caviedes has established himself as a significant figure in the American art world, with nearly thirty exhibitions in major cities across the United States.
